This past Wednesday, October 1st, was a day of intense competition and dazzling culinary displays, culminating in a spectacular win for our team. Our very own exceptional culinary leader at Grand Living Park at Lake Mary, Executive Chef Juan Garcia, and his talented partner, Sous Chef Sheila Rivera, showcased their extraordinary skill, creativity, and deep-seated passion for food, ultimately earning them the coveted 1st Place among many esteemed Senior Living Communities across Central Florida.
This victory is far more than just a trophy; it is a profound testament to the high standards of our IN GRAND TASTE® culinary program, and the unwavering pursuit of excellence that defines Grand Living Park at Lake Mary.
The Winning Dishes: Savory and Sweet Squash Creations
This year’s competition presented a unique challenge: participants were required to showcase squash in one or more dishes. Our team not only rose to the occasion but surpassed expectations with two outstanding, innovative creations—one savory and one sweet.
Savory Masterpiece: Butternut Squash Gnocchi
For the savory dish, our chefs presented hand-cut butternut squash gnocchi delicately formed to be pillowy and tender, with a melt-in-your-mouth texture. It was elegantly paired with a vibrant, herbaceous house-made pesto sauce, and finished with a generous shaving of aged asiago cheese, adding a bold, nutty finish. The response was overwhelming! Guests returned for seconds, and there were even requests for catering trays of this delightful dish.
Sweet Showstopper: Pumpkin Spice Wild Berry Trifle
Their sweet creation was equally showstopping. The Pumpkin Spice Wild Berry Trifle featured layers of soft, moist vanilla sponge cake, a jewel-toned, sharp wild berry compote, and a luxuriously smooth, spiced pumpkin mousse. It was all topped with a buttery brown sugar crumble for the perfect crunch. Each component was thoughtfully balanced, creating a dessert that was as stunning in presentation—with vivid colors and dynamic textures—as it was in flavor.

The success of the day was truly a reflection of our community’s spirit. Our team came together, as always, with the brightest of ideas and an unwavering spirit. It was all hands-on deck during the event, from the festive fall décor to the outstanding flavors, the smiling faces, and the flawless cohesiveness of the team.
The Senior Chef Showdown is a cherished annual event because it benefits a greater cause: All proceeds benefit Seniors First, Inc. This remarkable organization has been working tirelessly since 1966 to enhance the quality of life for seniors across Central Florida through critical programs that promote nutrition, community engagement, and independence. The 2025 proceeds will proudly support Seniors First, reinforcing our commitment to the well-being of the wider senior community.
Celebrating Chef Juan’s Dedication and Expertise
We are incredibly fortunate and immensely proud to have Executive Chef Juan Garcia lead our culinary team. This championship title is a well-deserved recognition of the outstanding talent and dedication that he pours into his work every single day.
Chef Juan’s culinary passion is deeply personal and long-standing. His journey began humbly in Maracaibo, Venezuela, where he was first inspired by the flavors and techniques learned in his grandmother’s kitchen. He then pursued professional excellence, graduating from the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu Culinary School. His career trajectory is equally impressive, with extensive experience as a Chef and Kitchen Manager at renowned organizations such as Hilton, The Capital Grille, and Disney’s Epcot.
Since joining the Lake Mary community in 2019, Chef Juan has elevated our dining experience, transforming mealtimes into joyful, highly anticipated events. His philosophy guides his every creation:
