At Grand Living Park at Lake Mary, we are often in the presence of greatness, but some lives shine with a particular brilliance. Recently, our community had the profound honor of celebrating a milestone that most only dream of: the 101st birthday of a true American hero, Herb Maneloveg.
While we share this story with a heavy heart—as Herb passed away shortly after his GRAND milestone celebration—we also share it with immense pride. To know Herb was to walk alongside history, and his final birthday was a testament to the legacy he leaves behind.

A Hero’s Journey: From the Battle of the Bulge to Main Street, U.S.A.
Herb’s life was a story of bravery written in the annals of history. As a Private in the U.S. Army’s 106th Infantry Division, Herb served during the Battle of the Bulge. It was there that he sustained injuries for which he was awarded the Purple Heart, a symbol of his sacrifice and dedication to the freedoms we cherish today.
To celebrate his 101st year, the Walt Disney World Resort rolled out the red carpet for Herb on January 25th. It was a day filled with the things Herb loved most: family, gratitude, and a bit of Disney magic.
- A Grand Procession: Herb journeyed down Main Street, U.S.A., taking in the sights of Cinderella Castle.
- A Front-Row Seat: He and his family enjoyed the Festival of Fantasy Parade, where he received waves and smiles from Mickey, Minnie, and the whole Disney cast.
- The Highest Honor: The day culminated in a moving Flag Retreat Ceremony at Magic Kingdom, where Herb served as the U.S. Armed Forces Representative of the Day.
Reflecting on the day, Herb shared a sentiment that perfectly captured his spirit:
“It’s a wish that is better than any wish I’ve ever had. To me, the important thing is family and they are here. It’s all I could ask for.”
A Legacy of Love
Herb’s daughter, Susan, echoed what we all felt at Grand Living: her father was more than just a decorated veteran; he was a “great guy, a great father, husband, and grandfather.” Watching him receive the attention and honor he deserved during his final days was a gift to everyone who knew him.
History isn’t just found in textbooks; it’s found in the smiles and stories of men like Herb. We are so grateful that he was able to witness his 101st year surrounded by such profound respect and the family he adored.

Our Gratitude and the GRAND PATRIOTS® Program
It has been one of the greatest privileges of our team at Grand Living Park at Lake Mary to have cared for Herb. He wasn’t just a resident; he was a friend and an inspiration.
At Grand Living, we hold a special place in our hearts for those who have served. Through our GRAND PATRIOTS® program, we strive every day to provide a community that honors the bravery of veterans like Herb. This program is our way of saying “Thank You” by ensuring our heroes receive the dignity, care, and recognition they earned through their service to our nation.
Herb Maneloveg’s journey has come to a peaceful end, but his story will continue to be told within our halls.
Rest in peace, Herb. Your mission is complete, and your legacy is secure.
In Loving Memory
